Oil on canvas, the sitter is the author of "A Nation at Bay: What an American Woman Saw and Did in Suffering Serbia," a first hand account written in 1918 of the Balkans during WWI and the great suffering of the Serbian people, which she experienced while working there as a volunteer providing medical assistance; she was later known as "Baroness Ruth deLuze" following her marriage to Baron Raymond deLuze of Saumur, France; illegible signature lower left, unframed. A first edition of "A Nation at Bay" accompanies this lot.
