RARE Edgefield District Dave the Slave Jar
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
(5) gallon ovoid form with applied ear handles and an even medium brown alkaline glaze, with wide mouth and rolled rim, inscribed "L M october 14 1857 Dave" (no capacity marks).

15.5 x 11.5 in.

Edgefield's most famous slave potter was a man called Dave. He was unique in his ability to turn thick walled high capacity jars, many inscribed with a signature, makers mark, and/or original poetry. At a time when literacy in slaves was illegal, Dave had learned to read and write and was not afraid to defy custom when inscribing his work.

An important and recent discovery. This fresh Dave jar has descended and is being consigned by the family that purchased it in 1899.

Chip of 1/2 in. to one handle; hairline above base; chip to bottom 1.25 in.

$20,000 - 30,000
