Acrylion on shaped burlap. Born in Brooklyn, Stephan studied at the Parsons School of Design, the Art Students League, the Pratt Institute, and received his MFA at the San Francisco Art Institute. In 1973 he accepted a teaching position at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. His works were exhibited extensively on both coasts at such prominent venues as the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art.
