Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Oil on canvas (with wax lining) and on new stretchers, signed at upper left corner "Dorothy Drew," titled "A Portrait of John," a photograph accompanying the painting shows that the artist also inscribed her name on the back of the canvas; housed in a modern gilt frame. Dorothy Drew studied at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design in New York City. She prided herself on her talents as a portrait painter, stating that "I want to paint people as they really are, but I want to see them at their best." E. C. Sherburne, a noted art critic, discussing this painting, said that the artist "manifests a command of drawing and pictorial values that gives her painting a larger interest than often obtained in portraiture."
