Face has later floral engraving around applied monogram plate initialed "A. C. G.", acanthus leaf tops handle, underside with London hallmarks for 1772/73, partial maker's mark for W & J Priest and distributor stamp "Wm. G. WHILDEN & CO." William Whilden (1828 - 1896) partnered in the Charleston, SC mercantile firm Hayden & Whilden from the 1850s until the company folded in 1863. As a Confederate lieutenant in Walter's Light Battery of Washington Artillery, Whilden served in Charleston's defense until its capture by Federals early in 1865. After the war, he returned to commerce as an importer of silver and other luxury goods.
