Oil on canvas, signed en verso lower right "Chas K Palmer / Painter Sept 1831", depicts an elderly gentleman said to be Nathaniel Dow, an early western Pennsylvania settler. The subject is shown holding a singular horn-handled walking stick. Painting housed in period, likely original, wooden frame. Dow's stick has fortunately survived as a companion to the painting in which it is depicted. A pewter disc affixed to the top of the handle is engraved "N Dow". LOA 39", lovely old patina throughout.
