Allan Adler is a celebrated American silversmith who learned his art from another great California silversmith, Porter Blanchard, in the late 1930s. Adler developed a strong following among many Hollywood celebrities (even hosting Katherine Hepburn at his workbench as an apprentice), presidents, museum curators, and silver collectors. He described his work as "clean lines with a bent toward the unconventional," as is evident in this large service. This entire service was completed during Adler's lifetime and takes a California twist on modern Swedish silversmithing design with hand-hammered surfaces to the front of each handle and the back of each bowl (for spoons).
