Mombacho," signed "A. Schwartz 56" lower left, on titled mat within composition frame. SS 9" x 11"; DOA 14" x 17" Adolph Schwartz emigrated from Germany to the United States in 1850. Although a young family man, Schwartz was not deterred from pursuing an adventurous life. He joined William Walker's imperialistic Nicaragua Expedition in 1856, traveled through California, explored the West with Fremont and served as a Union artillery officer during the Civil War.
