Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Consisting primarily of images taken in the 1940s and 1950s by Louis D. Rubin, Jr., author of A MEMORY OF TRAINS: THE BOLL WEEVIL AND OTHERS (Columbia: University of South Carolina Press, 2000). A large catalog envelope contains the (100+) original prints used for the book, each mounted to a sheet noting the picture's date, location and, sometimes, engine type. Included are two three-ring notebooks housing (50+) additional identified train photos, an envelope of (50+) mostly identified images and several rolls of negatives. This photo archive is supplemented by an unbound proof of Mr. Rubin's magnificent documentary memoir of the waning days of steam and the onset of diesel.

Louis D. Rubin, Jr., a native of Charleston, SC, was a long-time professor of English at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He is also well known as the founder of Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, a distinguished regional publishing house. As a young journalist prior to becoming an academic, Louis Rubin traveled America's rails armed with pen and camera. This collection is the result of that early endeavor.
