On paper laid to a linen backing, the scene depicts the Battle of Lake Erie on September 10, 1813 in which Americans commanded by Oliver Hazard Perry defeated a much larger British naval force. The lower margin is given to a manuscript title, key and explanation of the scene, all credited to "Cooper's Naval History," an 1839 study of the U. S. Navy by James Fenimore Cooper. Presented behind mat in a 20th century wooden frame. Sheet 18.5 x 27.5 in.; 25.75 x 36 in. in frame.
