The Prussing Estate

It is unclear whether Mooney was born in Ireland or Buffalo, NY, but despite being raised in New York, he went to Georgia and enlisted in the Confederate army at the outbreak of the Civil War. He began painting after the war and studied in New York City and in Europe. He lived for periods in Savannah, Key West, New York City, Washington, D.C., finally settling in Richmond, VA.

This painting was likely completed soon after the the Washington Monument's 1885 dedication. The panoramic view depicted here is from parkland on the north side of the District.

Three paintings by James Mooney have been sold in these galleries - a view of Richmond, a view of Jamestown and a still life with berries.

His paintings may be found in several private collections, the Valentine Museum in Richmond, VA, and the Virginia Historical Society.
