A hand-written note affixed to the verso reads Portrait of Henry Danforth (brother of my grand-father, James Danforth (FSW), born 1824, died 1847 / Killed in action in Mexican War. The subject is likely Private Henry Danforth, Co. A," 1st Regiment, Kentucky Mtd. Volunteers, killed at the Battle of Buena Vista, February 22-23, 1847.

A note affixed to the verso indicates the painting was rebacked and restored by Hannah Mee Horner in 1936; several paint flakes and lifting.
