Schaefels studied, and later taught, at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. His work recalls the great Flemish Baroque still life painters of the 17th century. The painting offered here epitomizes his exuberant still lifes with a profusion of peonies, azaleas, roses, lilac, iris and other flowers in a large glass vase atop a cloth draped table with sculptural fragment and Chinese blue and white porcelain base.
