Born the son of Christian Herter, co-founder of the influential New York design firm, Herter Brothers, Albert Herter was destined to be an artist. His family's wealth and connections enabled Herter to study at the Art Students League in New York and at the Académie Julian in Paris. He traveled extensively throughout his life, but two trips to Japan, one in 1889 and another in 1893, were particularly influential.

Herter exhibited still lifes and portraits frequently throughout the United States, including multiple shows at the National Academy of Design. His murals may be found in Paris, California, Wisconsin, New York, and everywhere in between. Herter was also a prolific illustrator, paintings covers for Ladies' Home Journal and WWI posters for the YMCA and Red Cross.

Herter's paintings are in numerous public and private collections, including the High Museum of Art, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
