Robert Henri was one of the most influential artists and teachers in twentieth-century American art. Henri advocated "art for life's sake," melding virtuoso paint handling in the depiction of people and scenes of modern urban society. He was a founder of "The Eight," alongside Everett Shinn, John Sloan, Arthur B. Davies, Ernest Lawson, Maurice Prendergast, George Luks, and William J. Glackens.

See Lot 203 for an important photographic portrait of Henri by Gertrude Käsebier, taken just prior to the seminal, and only, exhibition of the "The Eight" at the Macbeth Galleries, New York, NY.

Toning; mat burn.
