Washington, D. C., February 11, 1863, three pages on House of Representatives stationery, octavo, to a Lieutenant R. R. Weed, reading, in part, "...It is almost an impossibility for me to obtain a furlough for anyone...I do not think I would resign, unless an absolute necessity.

The recipient of this letter was Lt. Reuben R. Weed, Co. "A," 104th New York Infantry. Before the end of 1863 the unfortunate Weed would be dismissed by court-martial.
