Presented as an anniversary gift from the artist to the consignor's grandparents on their 10th wedding anniversary, 20 April 1902. The traditional gift for the 10th anniversary being tin, hence the appropriate nature of a wedding party painting on a tin pie plate.

The consignor's grandparents knew the artist in Cragsmoor, New York, where they both had homes.
