Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Late 19th century, oil on canvas, recounting the military career of Captain Benjamin J. Hill, Companies "C" and "K," 9th Maine Volunteers. An American eagle surmounts a shield emblazoned with a synopsis of Hill's deployments and a detailed inventory of the many actions in which he participated. Enlisting as a private on September 28, 1861, Hill was honorably discharged a captain on July 18, 1865. The primary campaigns during his lengthy term of service were the sieges of Charleston, Petersburg and Wilmington. Captain Hill was also present for Johnston's surrender near Durham, NC on April 26, 1865. This exemplary war record is mounted in its likely original wooden frame, the iron brackets of its stretcher bearing patent dates of 1882 and 1885.

DOA 34 x 29.5 in.

Some areas - mostly peripheral - of paint loss; a few chips to the frame's gilt liner; overall this escutcheon remains colorful, attractive and complete.
