Born in Kinston, Mangum studied at the Corcoran School of Art in D.C., and at the Art Students League in NYC. He returned to NC after deciding to teach and earned his bachelor’s degree in art and a master’s degree in art history from UNC-Chapel Hill. Mangum taught at Salem College in Winston-Salem from 1962-1987, serving as chairman of the art department for part of his tenure.
