Lot 253
Complete First American Octavo Edition of Audubon's Birds of America...
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
...From Drawings Made in the United States and Their Territories (New York: John James Audubon and Philadelphia: J. B. Chevalier, 1840-1844), seven volumes, large octavo (10.75 x 7 in.), leather boards with gilt rules throughout, raised bands on spine, gilt to page edges on all three sides, bound with half titles, the 500 color plates are all present under tissue overlays, the text interspersed with woodcuts throughout.

From the collection of the late Brien E. Kehoe, Washington, D.C.

Expected shelf rubbing and hinge wear, soiling to the boards; in Volume II the pp. 31-34 signature is disbound but present, otherwise the set is tightly bound; the plates and tissue overlays are generally problem-free with only the following minor issues noted: the overlays were improperly trimmed for Plates 209, 213, 261 and 479 and there is a crease to the tissue over Plate 411. Overall an exceptionally fine set of this highly praised American classic.

$10,000 - 20,000
