Young, 1802), first edition, octavo, 252 pages plus postscript leaf, includes a fold-out map of South Carolina with title page (disbound), a fold-out plate of fossil "teeth and bones," fold-out plate of a rice machine, a fold-out map of the Santee Canal, a fold-out map showing the entrance to Winyaw Bay, Georgetown, and a fold-out rice planting chart; calf boards with gilt red morocco title plate on spine. 19th century owner E. C. Brandt's gilt leather name plate is on the front cover.

Very rare, being one of the few survivors from an original first edition of a mere 500 copies. This early look at South Carolina was penned while the author was serving as the state's governor. A 1969 letter from New York City antiquarian dealer Peter Decker offering this book is included.

Internal foxing; front cover split along the hinge and disbound; boards chipped with overall crazing; binding intact and worthy of conservation.
