Written and illustrated by Maurice Sendak (New York: Harper & Row, 1963), oblong quarto (9.25 x 10 in.), pictorial boards with black cloth spine, printed endpapers, the dust jacket having no reference to the Caldecott Award on the flaps and no gold seal touting the prize, the front inner flap retains $3.50 price and has "40-80 / 1163" under the publisher's credit. This book is preserved in a sturdy custom protective case made by the Courier Bindery of Newport, Rhode Island.

Both the book and its jacket have age toning with a few pinpoint spots and some light browning along the horizontal edges; minor chipping and creases to the jacket; three small vertical splits on the jacket have been repaired. Overall a very good copy.
