Rare and Highly Important Henry Briggs Map, The North part of America
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
London, 1625, uncolored copperplate engraving by R. Elsbracke. This is the first English map to show California as an island and suggests a Northwest Passage to the Orient from Canada. On a realistic note, Britain's first tenuous footholds on the east coast are marked with "James Citti" being shown in Virginia while "Marthas vinyard," "C. Codd," and "Plymouth" are placed to the north.

Plate 292mm x 354mm; Sheet 12 7/8 x 15 3/8 in.; DOA in frame 17.25 x 19.5 in.

From the collection of the late Brien E. Kehoe, Washington, D.C.

Tiny split in the extreme top left corner not affecting the image; loose, but affixed to the mat with masking tape on the back going into the sheet for approximately .25 in. all around. The tape should manually lift off with due care taken.
