Born in Erie, Pennsylvania, this portrait was completed the year she married fellow artist William J. Kaula. They lived and maintained studio space in Boston's Fenway Studios. She exhibited frequently throughout her lifetime, showing works at the Paris Salons, the 1901 Pan-American Exposition, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the National Academy of Design.

This portrait depicts Captain John A. Gresham in his Grand Army of the Republic uniform. Captain Gresham served in the 56th Regiment, New York Infantry National Guard (100 days, 1864).
