Philippe Halsman is known for his photographs picturing Salvador Dalí, as seen here, and those of Marilyn Monroe, also offered in this auction. In the 1940s, Halsman and Dalí developed a friendship that lasted several decades and was explored and documented through collaborative photography. These particular three photographs are part of the Halsman/Dalí portfolio, and they embody characteristics typically associated with each artist. Halsman uses unusual lighting and the element of surprise to incorporate Dalí’s Surrealism, the fascination with time as seen through the clockface, and Dalí's famous moustache that often takes on a life of its own.
