Swiss "Mandoline Quator Expressive" Cylinder Music Box on Integral Stand

St. Croix, Switzerland, second half 19th century, single comb with approximately 200 teeth, a ratchet-wound movement plays six tunes from a 20.5 in. brass cylinder; a playlist numbered 9377 in manuscript is affixed to the lid's underside and names the instrument's importer as M. J. Paillard & Co., New York; the ebonized interior is punctuated with a small lithographed scene of an Alpine village. The case is raised on four turned legs; the music box and stand of burled birch veneers with ebonized borders.

DOA 36.5 x 40 x 20.5 in.

In working order with all teeth present; peripheral losses and browning to the tune list; stains to the comb's metal plate; losses to the interior's applied silk; scuffs and chips from normal use; some small areas of loose veneer; 1 in. area of veneer loss on rear; overall drying cracks and hairlines do not detract from attractive aged surfaces.
