Born in Columbia, SC, Susan Reed gained fame as a folk singer in New York City following WWII. Life magazine called her the "pet of Manhattan nightclubbers" and Alan Lomax praised her "Southern lyric songs."

By the 1960s she had moved away from the folk music scene. She ran an antiques shop in Greenwich Village and later a handicrafts store in Nyack, NY.
