Scarlett began his artistic career working at his uncle's jewelry firm and designing theatrical sets in his free time. He studied briefly at the Art Students' League in New York, but a chance meeting with Paul Klee in Switzerland redirected his work to the abstract and non-objective.

He exhibited frequently throughout his lifetime, including shows at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY (1950); Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY (1951); and the Museum of Art, Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, PA (now Carnegie Museum of Art, 1983).

Some minor creasing to sheets and minor scratches.
