Born in Brooklyn to immigrant "arty" parents and raised in Queens, Alex Katz is New York. He enrolled in the prestigious Cooper Union Art School in 1946 on the G. I. Bill. After graduating in 1949, Katz was awarded a summer scholarship for study at the Skowhegan School for Painting and Sculpture in Maine. Katz continues to split his time between a SoHo studio he first moved into in 1968 and a Lincolnville, Maine summer home and studio purchased in 1954.

Katz boldly perfected his figural work during the height of Abstract expressionism and Pop art. The painting offered here is instantly recognizable as a Katz - a closely cropped depiction of a young musician in bright lights with two fashionable women visible in the warm monochrome background.

Works by Alex Katz are in over 100 public collections worldwide.
