While pursuing a PhD in philosophy in Paris, a chance encounter with the French sculptor Marcel Gimond altered Bingming's life course. In 1950 he enrolled at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. His earliest sculptures were of the human form in the western classical tradition, but by the end of the 1950s he was focusing more on depictions of animals including crows, doves, cranes, and horses. He exhibited frequently throughout his lifetime.

"He was a seed of Chinese culture in the West for over 50 years; he brought with him the earth of his maternal culture, growing into a tall tree after absorbing sunlight, rain and dew. He was gone, bringing with him the exploration, pursuit and rumination of a generation of people. He was gone, leaving us a lesson: the clash and integration of the East and West will undoubtedly produce great art."
