Born in Rotterdam, Thieme began his career as a stage designer. He traveled extensively throughout his lifetime before finally settling in Rockport, MA. It was here that he finally dedicated himself to the fine arts, continuing to travel and paint en plein air.

Florida was one of his favorite destinations, with St. Augustine holding a particular draw. This painting depicts a sun-drenched scene set in Lincolnville, an area of the city of St. Augustine established by freedmen following the Civil War.
