Born in Washington, D.C., Warren's formative years were spent in Texas. After recieving his MFA in 1977 from the University of Texas at San Antonio, he accepted a teaching position at Davidson College in NC. He remained at the college until 2008. In 2016 the college mounted a retrospective of his paintings, Russ Warren: Works 1971-2015. He is represented in numerous public collections including Gibbes Museum of Art, Charleston, SC; Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indianapolis, IN; Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte, NC; North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh, NC; New Orleans Museum of Art, New Orleans, LA; and Princeton University Art Museum, Princeton, NJ.
