This exhibition traveled to the North Carolina Museum of History, Raleigh, NC, September 10 - December 4, 2016.

Born in Ohio, Thomas began his artistic career as a painter of the American scene. By 1942, he had moved to the south and was transitioning away from a realist style to that of abstract expressionism. He taught at UNC-Greensboro, Agnes Scott College in Decatur, GA, and the University of Georgia in Athens. A retrospective of his work was mounted at the North Carolina Museum of Art in 1973. Howard's paintings are in such diverse public collections as the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.; Museum of Wisconsin Art, West Bend, WI; North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh, NC; High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA; the Mint Museum, Charlotte, NC; and the Columbus Museum of Art, Columbus, OH.
