Locally Made Antique Key/Work Basket

Circa 1880s, constructed of heavy leather with applied leather strap handle, brass saddle rivet and nail fasteners, pine bottom, attributed to James Livingston Oxford, Caldwell County. Accompanied by a hand printed notation from the late John Oxford.

Collection of the Late John Oxford, Morganton, North Carolina.

James Oxford mustered into NC 26th Infantry, 1861, was listed, 1863, as a POW at Falling Waters and Point Lookout, later exchanged and survived the war. By descent to the present Oxford family.

Missing part of the inner rim leather band; minor loss and scratches to the surface; fatigue to the handle but still intact; loss of one rivet; later nails at the base of one handle.
