Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Mezzotint and etching, 1774-88, titles to include "A Fruit Market," "A Herb Market," "A Fish Market," and "A Game Market," published by John Boydell, London, housed in uniform matting and framing.

Platemark 16 1/8 x 22 3/4 in. (the first), 16 1/4 x 22 1/2 in. (the second), 16 x 22 7/8 in. (the third), 16 1/2 x 22 3/4 in. (the fourth); DOA 24 1/2 x 31 in. (each approximately)

This is the complete grouping of market scenes from The Houghton Gallery Series, and it is often called collectively "The Markets." Though completed in print form in the 18th century, the compositions here are exemplary of the Baroque market scene, a major branch of Netherlandish still life painting of the 17th century.

Overall nice condition and strong impressions; some scattered foxing marks; repaired tear upper right of the second; not examined out of frames.
