Russotto studied briefly at the Art Students League in New York City in the 1960s. After a foundation in figural work, he went on to be greatly influenced by the Abstract Expressionists and Surrealists. Over the course of several decades he experimented with the addition and subtraction of color from his abstract compositions. He exhibited frequently throughout his lifetime, with works in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum and the Asheville Art Museum.
