Born into a wealthy family in Stuttgart, Germany, Frank immigrated to New York in 1861. He traveled extensively throughout his lifetime, but maintained art studios in Pennsylvania and New York before settling in Los Angeles in 1908.

The board was originally cut and pierced together, likely by the artist; some minor craquelure to lower right quadrant with small paint flake.
