Queen Emma, a native of Waldeck and Pyrmont, became Queen consort of the Netherlands upon her marriage to King William III in 1879. After Emma's husband died in 1890, their daughter ruled the Netherlands as Queen Wilhelmina. Emma claimed the title Dowager Queen until her own death in 1934.
