Lot Details & Additional Photographs
"J. M. Mason", U. S. Senate, Washington, D.C., 1854, to W. W. Seaton, two pages, octavo, reading, in part: "It is understood in some conversation with Senators, that I shall announce the death of Mr. B---- tomorrow in some brief & appropriate manner & offer a sensitive impression of regret & respect, & trust the Senate adjourns to enable Senators to attend the funeral - and this I have no doubt will be too common in the House..." Presented in a framed display.

DOA 22.5 x 26.5 in.

In late 1861 James Mason and another Confederate diplomat, John Slidell of Louisiana, were seized from the British steamer Trent by the U.S. Navy. This flagrant breach of international protocol almost brought Britain into the American Civil War as a Confederate ally.

Very good condition.
