Garland paintings were developed in Antwerp in the early 17th century as a special type of still life by the artists Jan Brueghel the Elder and Hendrick van Balen. While typically surrounding a devotional image, the floral garland in this painting surrounds a portrait of a man and woman within an arched opening.

Obscuring varnish and some scattered re-touch visible under UV light.
