Collection of a Raleigh Gentleman

Born in Ohio, Thomas began his artistic career as a painter of the American scene. By 1942, he had moved to the south and was transitioning away from a realist style to that of abstract expressionism. Thomas became famous for mixing his own pigments from natural elements and was known to paint while listening to classical music. He taught at UNC-Greensboro, Agnes Scott College in Decatur, GA, and the University of Georgia in Athens. A retrospective of his work was mounted at the North Carolina Museum of Art in 1973. Howard's paintings are in such diverse public collections as the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.; Museum of Wisconsin Art, West Bend, WI; North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh, NC; High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA; the Mint Museum, Charlotte, NC; and the Columbus Museum of Art, Columbus, OH. This particular work is referenced in his painting diaries, now in the Southern Historical Collection at UNC-Chapel Hill.
