Folk Art Whirligig, Vollis Simpson, (NC 1919-2013)
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Constructed of found materials assembled in tower form, painted in primary colors surmounted by a small American flag, signature not found. Unlike most of Simpson's whirligigs, this is a diminutive size suitable for indoor display.

23 x 8 in. (Flag is removable).

A NC native, Simpson was an outsider artist who created kinetic art, whirligigs, from assorted found parts and sheet metal. His contributions to visionary art were recognized by the state and his whirligigs are now the official folk art of NC. The city of Wilson is home to the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park and his sculptures are in the permanent collection of the NC Museum of Art, American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, and the American Folk Art Museum in New York, NY.

Peeling paint in some spots as well as accumulated debris at the base.
