Originally from England, Thomas Dalton Beaumont immigrated to the United States and garnered a good reputation for his paintings of dogs and horses. He settled in Columbus, Ohio, but also frequently traveled to New York and Richmond, Virginia.

Stretcher marks (particularly visible along top stretcher); a tear and small holes in the canvas repaired; scattered minor spot touch-ups visible under UV light; minor loss to frame. The painting was conserved in 2006 by Perry Hurt of Regional Conservation Services. A copy of the treatment report is available.
