Oil on canvas on Masonite, featuring the motto "Gradatim Vincimus" (We Conquer by Degrees), presented in an ebonized frame.

68.5 x 68.5 in. (wired to hang diagonally)

From the Collection of a Gentleman, Florida

This is the funerary hatchment of Sir James Duke (1792-1873), 1st Baronet, circa 1849. He was Lord Mayor of London and MP for London. The arms on the shield are those of Duke impaling Bennett, for his wife Jane Amelia Bennett. The fact that only the left side containing the Duke arms is painted black indicates that this hatchment was painted for Sir James' funeral in 1873. His wife re-married and died in 1900.

Yellowing to varnish; minor re-touch.
