Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Being partially printed Virginia military commissions presented to one Archibald Hughes, as follows: Document Signed "Dunmore," Williamsburg, May 28, 1774, naming Hughes a Captain in Pittsylvania County militia during "Lord Dunmore's War" against the Shawnee and Mingo nations on the western frontier; plus Document Signed "P Henry as Governor," Williamsburg, February 8, 1777, naming Hughes a Colonel in Henry County patriot militia during the American Revolution. The documents are backed by linen for stability and presented in their original early 20th century wooden frames.

Dunmore frame DOA 9.25 x 11.75 in.; Henry frame DOA 9.75 x 13.75 in.

From a private North Carolina estate

Both documents have extensive damp stains along their lower margin, fortunately not reaching print or a signature; the paper is evenly toned, however shows losses along folds that reveal underlying linen; a thin vertical split runs through the Dunmore signature; both documents are in overall fair condition and enjoy bold signatures.
