Eliza Bailey Masters (1845-1921) founded the Masters School at Dobbs Ferry, New York, originally known as the "Misses Masters' Boarding and Day School for Young Ladies and Children," in 1877. The daughter of a devout Presbyterian family, Masters believed in educating young woman beyond just a "finishing school" - her students were taught Latin, mathematics, astronomy, and social work.
