Exhibited:
A Retrospective Exhibition (1939 to 1973) of the work of Claude Howell, St. John's Art Gallery, Wilmington, North Carolina (October 5 - 31, 1973)

Born in Wilmington, Howell received his early artistic training from an eccentric British transplant, Elisabeth Chant. He went on to seek further training during his travels to artist colonies in the Northeast, New York, and Paris. Through these travels, Howell learned to paint what he knew and loved - life along the Cape Fear.

This painting is accompanied by two articles written by Mr. Haislip on Claude Howell and two postcards written by Claude Howell to Mr. Haislip regarding some re-touch and new varnish for the painting.

Several small paint flakes and some paint lifting; shallow dent to upper right quadrant of canvas; minor rubbing to frame.
