South Carolina, mid-19th century, poplar cross rails, shaped headboard with relief carved basket of fruit within an applied beaded oval surround, four posts, each with upper Corinthian capital surmounted by a stylized bamboo tester support with relief carved triple sided peach, above a spiral twist column featuring leaf and grape design above a reeded urn with floral swag and acanthus leaf base, bed bolt panels with relief carved pineapple, raised on stylized fluted tapered inverted trumpet feet, full size, with custom late 20th century style-appropriate side rails, with bolts.

Assembled DOA 88 x 57.5 x 85.5 in. Interior rail 51.5 x 78.5 in. Floor to bottom of rail 20 in. Headboard 88 x 57.5 in.

Family history holds the bedstead was from the Calhoun mansion in Charleston, South Carolina; by descent in the family of George Williams, builder of the mansion circa 1876.

Replaced custom side rails; later yellow pine tester; light wear and abrasions; cut and patches at original side bed rail mortise joint.
