Oil on canvas (lined), unsigned, circa 1825, inscribed on the verso "Jane Carr Singleton - Virginia / Sister of / Maria Carr Kerfoot," presented in a period appropriate frame.

Jane S. Carr Singleton was the daughter of Joseph Carr and Delia Strother Carr. Her father was a successful merchant and founder of "Carrtown," now known as Upperville in Fauquier County, Virginia. She married married Robert Singleton (b. ca. 1796, VA) on January 15, 1824.

This portrait bears some resemblance to portraits of the Kerfoot family, including Daniel Sowers Kerfoot, husband of Jane's sister, Maria Carr Kerfoot; William Carter Kerfoot and Elizabeth A. Sowers Kerfoot; and George Louthan Kerfoot.

Abrading to sitter's hairline at center part; stretcher marks; canvas in need of re-stretching.
