Royal Presentation Frame Set of King Alfonso XII and Queen Mercedes
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Circa 1880, the first frame holding a carte de visite of the young king standing and featuring the abbreviated coat of arms of the Spanish monarchy to the shaped crest, each corner with an applied fleur de lis reading "Alfonso XII" (9 5/8 x 6 1/8 in.); the second frame holds a carte de visite of the young queen seated in an ornate interior, a crown and fleur de lis decorate the frame (8 1/8 x 5.5 in.).

Alfonso XII reigned from 1874 until his death in 1885, and is noted as the last monarch of Spain to have died during his service to the throne. The young queen seen here is Alfonso's first wife, and first cousin, Princess Maria de las Mercedes, daughter of Antoine, Duke of Montpensier, but she died within six months of the marriage, after a miscarriage and complications of typhoid fever.

Minor rubbing to each frame.
